The Long Shadow: The Great War and the Twentieth Century by David Reynolds, on one of the benches at Bank DLR station platform. Amazon reviews range from "A great book for feeble minded Daily Mail readers" to "Excellent and clearly written. I learnt a lot". Also abandoned: a bobble hat.

Albany Street, London, NW1. One of the myths created by the "TV talent-show" culture is that "everyone can be a star". In fact, most people cannot be a star and should not be a star. Wearing this hat will not help you be a star, either.
